The Neighbourhood
Full of history and remnants of old Wellington, Aro Valley has a lively and diverse mix of students, professionals, artists and older residents. The area has a reputation for vocal, political debate. The locals are friendly and always up for a chat.
The streets are lined with trees and in spring the footpath is blanketed in yellow Kowhai flowers and the native Tui are prolific. Thanks to neighbouring Zealandia Wildlife Sanctuary, native birds are abundant and it isn’t unusual to spot Kaka and low flying Kereru.
Located on the city fringe, Aro Valley is surrounded by parkland – Aro Park to the north, Polhill Gully Recreation Reserve to the Northwest and Tenera Reserve and Central Park the Southeast. Mountain biking and walking tracks are close by.
Step out the gate into the small shopping area of Aro Street, comprising two small supermarkets, which also have a basic wine collection, a fruit and vegetable shop, two cafes, an excellent bakery, a fish and chip shop, an art gallery, a second hand store, a tiny fine-dining restaurant, hairdresser, Goldsmith with bespoke jewellery, an interior design shop and a perfumery. The Garage Project craft brewery is down the road and their popular bar is C.200m away. Aro Video offers an extensive collection of art house viewing just across the road. .
The rental property is a short walk to the bohemian Cuba St precinct, Courtney Place theatres, art galleries, dining, cinema and Victoria University of Wellington. Also within an easy walk, short bike or bus ride are Wellington's central business district, National Archive, City Gallery, Parliament, Massey University, Toi Whakaari, Whitireia, Te Auaha, National Library, Zealandia Wildlife Sanctuary, Freyberg Fitness Centre and Pool, Thorndon Baths and Oriental Bay.
It is easy to live here without a car as everything is within walking, bike or scooter distance. If car parking is needed, it is on the street only. Aro St is within the Mevo carshare drop off zone, making carshare an easy option.
The house has a lockable shed in the rear garden for bicycle storage.
